A Cultural Treasure in Los Angeles

The Autry National Center is a proud steward of the priceless Southwest Museum collection and the historic Southwest buildings. Our ongoing conservation and preservation work will ensure that both are available for future generations in Los Angeles to enjoy. When the current rehabilitation project is completed, the new Southwest Museum Education and Cultural Center and the expanded Museum of the American West at Griffith Park will together form a true national center for the American West, telling the inclusive and complex stories of the West, and fulfilling the vision of Charles Lummis and Gene Autry.

The Vision

Preserving the Southwest Buildings: Preserving this iconic landmark is our priority. Already the Autry has invested millions of dollars to rehabilitate and preserve the aging and deteriorating Southwest building. We have earmarked it a historic landmark, and are working with community, educational and cultural leaders to secure a vibrant public use for the future.
Protecting the Southwest Collection: This collection is one of the most significant in the nation. Our elaborate preservation plan for the collection involves removing the 240,000+ artifacts from the deteriorating Caracol Tower and moving it temporarily to areas currently used as exhibition space.
Creating a National Center: The Autry is embarking on an exciting plan to create a true national center for the American West, with campuses in Mt. Washington and Griffith Park. When this plan is fulfilled, Native American artifacts from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian will be exhibited alongside collections from the Museum of the American West in Griffith Park. By expanding the Griffith Park campus, the Autry will create an integrated museum that will provide far greater access to larger segments of the collection, especially the renowned Southwest collection – most of which has been hidden from public view for decades. |
